About the National Burns Collection
Burns only lived for 37 years but during an eventful lifetime he visited many places, knew many people and committed many of his experiences to paper for posterity. The impression Burns made on the nation and its people is as indelible as the objects which bear his mark. The National Burns Collection is our direct link to Burns and is cherished by many different organisations and individuals across Scotland. Museums, libraries, archive centres, inns, Masonic lodges, country houses and castles, and numerous private collections in Scotland care for a huge range of objects with a particular Burns association. The Distributed National Burns Collections Project (November 2003-March 2005), a 16 month Strategic Change Fund project, seeks to encourage those organisations in Scotland holding Burns-related artefacts to work in partnership to improve access to, and stewardship of, the distributed national collection. This website is a direct outcome of a scoping study report published by the DNBC Project in April 2004 (a PDF download is available below) which for the first time surveys the National Burns Collection and describes some of the issues associated with caring for a collection of national significance. The National Burns Collection partnership are already working together to tackle challenges such as improving conservation and documentation of the distributed collection, increasing access for different audiences and realising the enormous learning potential of the National Burns Collection. More long term measures are recommended in a road map report which will be launched in January 2005.
