Certificate of Good Character of Agnes Broun, Mother of Burns

Agnes Broun (1732-1820) was born in Craigenton Farm, Kirkoswald, Ayrshire and was to become the mother of Robert Burns (1759-96) Scotland's National Poet. She married a market gardener from the north east of Scotland named William Burnes and settled in Alloway, Ayrshire to rear 7 children.

This certificate by the Kirk Session of Tarbolton testifies to the good character of Agnes Burnes and her children is dated 4th August 1784.

This document with others relating to the Burnes family is on display in Burns Cottage Museum, Alloway.
