Almost 250 years since the birth of Robert Burns, the man and his poetry continue to provide learning and inspiration for successive generations of young Scots. Within the 5-14 Scottish Curriculum there is a commitment to raising pupils’ awareness of their cultural heritage. Throughout Scotland a wealth of resources exist which help realise this commitment and Burns-related resources play a key role in meeting these national objectives.

The link below gives Teachers an idea about what facilities venues have to offer school groups.

>> Venues for Teachers <<

By using this teaching resource to study the life and times of Scotland’s national bard, teachers are provided with a range of activities to meet curriculum requirements and enhance such learning (venues to visit, virtual visits on the website, historical artefacts to view and handle and a range of 5-14 related lesson plans). This kit is designed to get the best out of visiting any venue in the country which cares for Burns-related artefacts. It will also enable remote access to the National Burns Collection regardless of where you are.

Making an actual visit to a Burns venue. Activities designed for before, during and after an actual visit to a museum, library or archive link with the Environmental Studies part of the curriculum and The Nature of Historical Evidence. Details of the main venues to visit in Scotland are also provided.

Make a virtual visit to any of six historical venues across Scotland without leaving the classroom! Activities designed for before, during and after a virtual visit relate to the Environmental Studies part of the curriculum and Knowledge and Understanding and Citizenship, Developing Informed Attitudes and Skills. Each virtual venue has been carefully selected to reflect milestones in the life story of Robert Burns.
